Best Practices for Coaches
- Think of yourself as a facilitator of a two-way learning relationship.
- Take the time to prepare for your role. Assess your experiences. Assess your student’s needs.
- Clear and consistent communication is key.
- Don’t try to be a “guru” or expert.
- Apply the 80/20 approach – listen 80% and talk 20% of the time
- Remember to celebrate successes.
- Prioritize quality over quantity.
- Be yourself, but make space for your own growth.
Best Practices for Participants
- Take the initiative for the relationship.
- Ask for advice and welcome constructive criticism.
- Be considerate of your Coach’s time. Coaches are by definition more established in their careers.
- Seriously consider the advice given to you by your Coach, even if your immediate reaction is not positive.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect.
- Show appreciation for the time and assistance given to you by your Coach.
