Best Practices for Coaches

• Think of yourself as a facilitator of a two-way learning relationship. 
• Take the time to prepare for your role. Assess your experiences. Assess your student’s needs.
• Clear and consistent communication is key.
• Don’t try to be a “guru” or expert. 
• Apply the 80/20 approach – listen 80% and talk 20% of the time 
• Remember to celebrate successes.
• Prioritize quality over quantity.
• Be yourself, but make space for your own growth.

Best Practices for Participants

• Take the initiative for the relationship. 
• Ask for advice and welcome constructive criticism. 
• Be considerate of your Coach’s time. Coaches are by definition more established in their careers.
• Seriously consider the advice given to you by your Coach, even if your immediate reaction is not positive. 
• Maintain confidentiality and respect. 
• Show appreciation for the time and assistance given to you by your Coach.
