Facebook Threads have been a buzz-worthy addition to the social media landscape. However, what many don’t realize is that Threads isn’t as new as it might seem. This blog post explores the journey of Threads, its impact on users, and recommendations.
The Birth of Threads
Introduced by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Threads emerged as a camera-first messaging app in 2019. Initially built with privacy in mind, the app was designed to enable users to connect with their close friends list on Instagram in a dedicated space. In addition, Threads offered two new features called Status and Auto Status that allowed users to manually set an emoji as an away message to show Close Friends what they’re up to. The intention? To give contextual clues to why someone might not respond and opportunities to meet up offline. Quoting the company, “For your smaller circle of friends, we saw the need to stay more connected throughout the day, so you can communicate what you’re doing and how you’re feeling through photos and videos.” The platform was tailored exclusively for instant messaging and photo-sharing where users could engage with their inner circle. However, because it didn’t achieve mainstream adoption in 2020, it was officially shut down in 2021.
Explosive Re-emergence
Threads re-emerged in 2023, and amassed more than 10 million users in the first seven hours according to Mark Zuckerburg, marking it as one of the most successful app launches in history. Described as a ‘text-based conversation app’, Threads enables users to create posts incorporating links, images, and videos. Unlike its initial purpose, the apps focused on public conversation rather than private messages – with many touting it as the “Twitter rival”.
Public Response to Threads
The public response to Facebook threads has been mixed. Some people appreciate the ability to have more in-depth conversations or thoughts about specific topics, while others find them to be cluttered and difficult to follow.

Threads quickly demonstrated its potential, with links to Instagram, attracting big brands like Billboard, HBO, and Variety. Meta actively pursued social media influencers, encouraging them to post frequently,
potentially revolutionizing customer engagement and advertising practices. For businesses seeking growth and innovation, Threads presents an opportunity to experiment and potentially find new clients or influencers. The correlation between effort and outcome can be enlightening.
Pitfalls of Threads:
While Threads offers promise, it’s not without its limitations. Currently lacking comprehensive data analytics, it poses challenges for brands trying to assess their performance. Additionally, ads are not yet available on Threads, limiting advertising options.
Threads also have some feature limitations, such as the absence of discoverability elements like hashtags and keyword searches. The platform is still in the process of adding essential features, which may be more advantageous to users who join later.
